Having Problems Getting a Good Night's Sleep? Get the Facts on Insomnia Here

By Ash Derbe

Insomnia is a condition whereby the ability to stay asleep for a long enough period of time to feel fully rested is absent. Daytime chronic fatigue and lack of energy is the consequence. Insufficient sleep affects mental clarity causing impaired performance of tasks requiring critial thinking.

Generally, people that have insomnia can't fall asleep even though they are very tired. They may even achieve a light sleep that often leaves them fatigued and tired after waking up or they awake too early.

Insomnia causes are being researched and there is a debate on whether insomnia is a symptom of another psychological or physical condition or whether it's a primary disorder all on its own.

Insomnia symptoms typically consist of the following:

1. Waking from sleep too early and the inability to fall back to sleep

2. Dependence on sleeping aids like sleeping pills or alcohol to fall asleep

3. Feelings of fatigue and being tired during waking hours

4. Headaches occuring frequently

5. You're easily irritated

6. Inability to concentrate

7. Waking up tired and not energized

8. Drifting off to sleep takes more than an hour

9. Stiring often during the night

People that have insomnia are called insomniacs. Insomniacs are often not able to close their eyes and make their minds still for any length of time. This author knows the feeling all too well, going to bed with a mind that continues to be very active.

Our world is filled with stress and we often have unfinished responsibilities or to-do lists left that actively drive our minds when it's time to go to bed. Some people are not able to effectively leave those unfinished tasks aside then when it's time to go to sleep.

Some artistic personalities swear they create their best ideas just before falling asleep while laying in bed. A famous philosopher once said, "If a man created as many great ideas in the daytime as he does suffering from insomnia, he'd be a millionnaire!" Although there is some truth in every anecdote, sleep issues can affect a person's health for the worse.

The dastardly thing about insomnia is your yearning to fall asleep but you're not able to do it. Your brain stays active and you're unable to quiet it down long enough to achieve the peaceful rest you need. Consequently, the next day you're so tired and unable to properly function. - 29964
