Insomnia is the inability to get a good night's sleep at least long enough to feel rested the next morning. What follows is a sensation of daytime fatigue and being tired. The inability to think clearly and concentrate is impaired affecting performance of daytime activities.

Generally, people that have insomnia can't fall asleep even though they are very tired. They may even achieve a light sleep that often leaves them fatigued and tired after waking up or they awake too early.

Insomnia causes are being studied and there is controversy on whether the condition is a sympton of another physical or psychological ailment or whether its a primary ailment of its own.

Insomnia symptoms typically consist of the following:

1. Waking up way too early and inability to fall to sleep again

2. Reliance on drugs and/or alcohol to go to asleep

3. Feelings of fatigue and being tired during waking hours

4. Complaining of headaches often

5. You're easily irritated

6. Inability to concentrate

7. Waking up tired and not energized

8. Drifting off to sleep takes more than an hour

9. Stiring often during the night

People suffering from insomnia are referred to as insomniacs. Insomniacs frequently complain of their inability to shut their eyes or keep their minds still for a sustained period of time. This author is familiar with having your mind continue to race at bedtime.

Our world is filled with stress and we often have unfinished responsibilities or to-do lists left that actively drive our minds when it's time to go to bed. Some people are not able to effectively leave those unfinished tasks aside then when it's time to go to sleep.

Right brained artistic types assert they conjure up their best ideas nocturnally while they're lying in bed trying to fall asleep. One scholar half jokingly said, "If a man came up with as many daytime ideas as he does as an insomniac, he'd make a fortune!" In reality, there might be some truth in this statement, however in the long-term, the lack of sleep will take its toll on a person's health.

The dastardly thing about insomnia is your yearning to fall asleep but you're not able to do it. Your brain stays active and you're unable to quiet it down long enough to achieve the peaceful rest you need. Consequently, the next day you're so tired and unable to properly function. - 29964
